THE COMFORTS OF HOME

Summer sure treated us to an encore performance this year. And although I’ve absolutely loved the extra sunshine and warmth, I have to admit that it feels good to finally welcome fall. The leaves are changing, the air is crisp, and it’s time to get cozy at home.

That means bringing on the layers, especially on our beds. One of my team’s favorite finds is the Rejuvenation Poppy handstitched quilt, shown in the Sunburst colorway, which we picked for the primary bedroom of a newly renovated Tudor we worked on in Edina (above). Plush velvet pillows in solid hues balance the mix of patterns in the linens. As our nights get longer, I sure wouldn’t mind spending more time lounging in a spot surrounded with cozy character like this. The same goes for the design ideas and inspiration below, which we’ve recently integrated—or will soon integrate—into projects. Happy fall!

Design Moment: A good leopard print is iconic. Sure, it may come and go, but if fashion is any indication (we’ve been tracking leopard’s resurgence for several months now, including coverage in yet another story in Vogue just a few days ago), interiors will follow. That’s because leopard remains a staple—a warm, luxurious print we would almost consider a neutral.

Local Artisan: We love restoring and even reimagining special furniture pieces, and The Furniture Redeemer is at the top of our list of go-to sources. That’s because Kasey Pitstick (aka The Furniture Redeemer), who lives in Victoria, brings pieces back to life unlike anyone we’ve ever seen. Take the vintage bar cart one of our clients had, shown here. Kasey refurbished it inside and out, complete with a fun pop of color on the interior.

Seasonal Extra: Whenever we can find a good Zak + Fox collection (which is often), we love it! Their prints are exceptional and always on the leading edge, oftentimes moody, and in colors that are just a little different. The NYC-based studio lately blew us away with their Harvest collection—31 designs based on the elements, flora, and fauna.

Places we love: It’s hard to beat a cozy coffee shop on a cool fall weekend. My team’s favorites include everything from the classic Nina’s Coffee Cafe in St. Paul to newer options like FRGMNT Coffee in St. Anthony Main, the Spyhouse location at the Emery Hotel in downtown Minneapolis, and Mojo Coffee Gallery in Northeast.

Statement Piece: I absolutely LOVE the Viking counter chair from Bessa Art & Design, which we used in a recent condo project at the Eleven in Minneapolis. As much as I adore the fur, it’s the detailing on the legs—black oxidized brass and polished brass, all hand cast—that won me over. Described as “functional art” by the company’s founder, Portuguese designer Bessa, the pieces are designed and produced in Porto, Portugal.

Design tip: Swap out bedding between seasons. Right now, that means moving from summer linens to percale/sateen in warmer tones, and then piling on the layers, like the Rejuvenation Poppy Handstitched quilt in the cozy bedroom at the top of this post. Matouk, Sferra, Ettitude, Parachute, Schoolhouse, and Annie Selke are a few of our other favorite bedding sources, and all of them warm things up this time of year.
